Hello   -

Sailing is the latest experience in our lives! The boat which Sahaja and Harley (her husband) have seemingly been working on for ages is finally in the water!  And she sails like a gem.  Well so they say - but for me accustomed only to sitting in the back of a big yacht sipping wine and eating snacks, I had a rude awakening on my first sail in "Te Mateo" - I found out you have to HANG on most of the time and acrylic wine glasses will be the go next time as all my glass ones landed in the bilge water in the bottom of the boat in pieces! Poor Sahaja doubts I will ever go again - but she is wrong - the chance to be on the river and enjoy the beautiful sunny day was a gift I will certainly accept again.

Inflammation and diet - how they affect health.
Inflammation is very important to the body which helps us heal when injured. But if the body gets stuck in chronic inflammation or excessive inflammation, then this condition can be an underlying cause related to heart disease, cancer, diabetes, obesity and mental health problems and it accelerates the aging process. 

So what can we do about this?

Some important changes to our diet will help immensely - use virgin olive oil, and coconut oil in your cooking rather than animal fats, or vegetable see oils (which by the way are very often palm oil - and palm plantations are an environmental disaster for many areas in South East Asia)
Eat deep sea cold water fish and take extra good quality fish oils daily. 
Eat lots of red colours in your fruits and vegetables - berries, beetroot, carrots - and increase your greens including green tea which is a great antioxidant.
Keep your consumption of sugar highly refined carbohydrates to a minimum to help your insulin work in the way it should.

Can't sleep?
try these tips:

  • Stop drinking caffeine of any sort after midday.

  • Exercise - try a minimum of 20 minutes brisk walking early in the morning.

  • Get some sunlight - without sunglasses - it stimulates the production of melatonin (the sleep hormone) and will help you adjust your normal circadian rhythm.

  • Don't turn on the light if you wake in the night it stops the melatonin production dead in its tracks!

  • Turn off the TV or the computer at least 45 minutes before bed.

  • Read something relaxing just before sleeping.

  • Do not eat a heavy meal later than 7pm.

The Dangers of Ingesting Aspartame
Here is a copy of an email we received this week that may interest you if you are one of those who still drinks Diet drinks, or chews sugar free gum, or who ingests Aspartame - NutraSweet in one of its many insidious forms. (See our article)

Dear Best Health,

I read your article about 6 months ago and felt that I had the symptoms you describe for Aspartame poisoning - I suffered from server headaches all the time, anxiety and vertigo from time to time - I was getting worried because I was taking so much Nurafen to stop the pain so I knew I had to do something.

So I decided to cut out all the foods and drinks that contained Aspartame - I loved Pepsi Max and Diet Pepsi and drank it with almost every meal up to 3-4 times a day. 

Anyway so I started my Aspartame free diet to see what would happen and almost instantly I stoped having headaches, I felt more active and had heaps more energy.

So after a couple of months I thought, just in case this isn't just by coincidence that I felt better, I decided to go back on it and see what happens. Pretty much instantly I felt like crap again - headaches came back, I had mild anxiety again etc.

So you will be happy to know that now because of the awareness you gave me I now am Aspartame free and I feel great - no more headaches!!!
