Focus on Digestion and Immunity...

Do you suffer from symptoms of poor digestion: burping, bloating, excessive gas, feeling tired after eating, abdominal cramps and aches, indigestion and fullness lasting 2-4 hours after eating, alternative constipation and diarrhoea.

Did you know that if your digestion is not working well, that you will be more prone to allergies, rashes, hives, arthritic pain, sinus problems, and all the associated "dis-ease" states that go along with the inflammation throughout the body caused by poor gut function.

It has been stated that 90% of our immune system is in the 'gut".  The mucosal lining in the digestive system is our front line defence.  If this is in a poor state, it follows that we will be in poor health. The friendly bacteria in our digestive system completely determine our immunity. Interestingly enough, it is also now known that there are more neurons (nerve cells) in the gut than in the spinal tissue and the peripheral nervous system - (i.e. all your nerves all round the body).  These produce serotonin - the feel good hormone.  No serotonin - no feel good!

Now do you understand a little more why when you come to Best Health, or go to almost any complementary health practitioner that they will ask you about your bathroom habits - they will ask you "how is your digestion?"

We know as well that stress negatively affects your digestive function.   Higher stress leads to increased cholesterol, deficiency in essential fatty acids, deficiency in Hydrochloric acid - (essential for digestion) raised cortisol (a stress hormone leading to inflammation) salt retention, insulin resistance (a pre-cursor to diabetes) thyroid and other endocrine problems, reflux, disturbance in the good bacteria in the gut, and increase in all the pro-inflammatory factors.

If you do not produce enough Hydrochloric acid in the stomach, you will not be able to have a good balance of the helpful bacteria as they are unable to stick to the gut wall and colonise there as they should.

So how can you encourage more production.  Swedish bitters - that old remedy - taken before meals, and some slippery elm (available from your health food store) after meals will help.  Not eating on the run is essential.  Apple cider vinegar - two teaspoons in warm water half and hour before meals can also help.  And we have available good quality digestive enzymes to supplement your diet - these can make a profound difference to your digestion.

Be aware also not to drink with eating - it will dilute your digestive juices and lessen your ability to properly digest your food.  Chlorinated water is also said to neutralise the stomach acids so make sure the water you drink is pure. See the Wellness Site for a recommended filtration system.

So your gut is your first line of defence. Make sure you treat it well to stay healthy and fit throughout the winter months - and of course is you need some help and some good advice - come by and see us, or drop us an email - we will be able to advise you on the best quality supplementation, assist you in reducing your stress levels, and help you bring your digestion into optimal functioning so that you can be bright, healthy and happy.
